Japanese Pygmy Woodpecker

Japanese Pygmy Woodpecker

A small woodpecker that’s common and widely distributed in Japan. It’s also a year-round resident bird often seen in urban parks and lowland forests. 🌳🌳

When I visited Hokkaido in 2023, it was my first time watching woodpeckers climb trees up close. They spiraled around the rough trunks, pecking at the bark as they climbed.

Looking closely at their toes, you can clearly see an “❌” shape, with two toes pointing forward and two pointing backward (Zygodactyl). This arrangement provides a strong and balanced grip on vertical tree trunks.🤏🏽
